SPONSOR A SCHOLARSHIP

Thank you for investigating how you or your group might help to equip a Cameroonian man or woman who desires to be further trained in the areas of Bible translation, linguistics and literacy.  Our mission is doing more and more training of nationals that have capacity, interest and motivation to participate, usually in the development of their very own mother-tongue language, and sometimes in the languages of other groups.  These language workers are contributing enormously to the translation of scripture into their respective languages.  But the skills needed require training.  Helping these candidates through scholarships is a very practical way to be involved in getting God's word into the hands of those who don't yet have it.

There are two options presented here for your consideration.

Option One:  Our mission, SIL Cameroon, conducts training sessions almost on a continuous basis. Some courses are given in the regional training centers of Yaounde, Bamenda and the North, as well as in more remote locations where facilities exist that serve these purposes.  Candidates are presented by each language community.  Courses run from 1 to 4 weeks long.  Funding for these courses comes from various sources, one of them being this kind of “scholarship” effort.  But in general, funding is limited and dictates how many courses can be offered each year, of which kinds and how many candidates can be trained.  Course participants are housed and fed on-site at the location of training.  The typical cost for all expenses runs $150 per week for each student.  Courses are modular with various subjects/skills being taught/acquired.   There is a path by which candidates, over a number of years, may attend all the needed courses in the field of their speciality, completing a large body of study.

Listed here are just a few of the course titles offered to give you a sense of the subjects encountered.

Bible Translation Principles (9 courses, each is a 1 or 2 week module).  Translation Workshop (covering all or a portion of one of the books of the New Testament – revolving).  Paratext Checks 1 & 2.  Courses in Literacy and Literacy Training, Scripture Use, and many others.

One advantage of this training program is that it is not full-time.  Students come for several weeks of training, then return to their homes, farms, jobs, churches, etc., to return again at a later date to continue their training.  In many cases, those being trained have already been informally involved in language learning/teaching, assisting our people in studying their language in preparation for the beginning of translation work.  The training they receive multiplies and deepens their contribution to the continuation of the development of their language and the arrival of God' word spoken and read in their  heart language.

Option Two:  Cameroon Baptist Theological Seminary (CBTS) and SIL Cameroon have partnered together in the development of Cameroon's first Bible Translation Degree Program, which grants a Bachelor's Degree to students completing the 4-years of intensive coursework.  These graduates are then equipped to engage their language, or other languages needing development and needing God's word.  Your gift of $500 is sufficient to cover all the costs of a single student for 1 trimester.  Expenses included are tuition, books, photocopies, housing, food and medical expenses.  Imagine that; $1,500 would pay for the entire year for one student.  All donations entering this scholarship fund will be used to assist needy students with these expenses, which are heavy in their economic context, especially given that their study loads are intense and require full-time attention for most of the 4-years of study.
